Australian Medical Interview Guides
Every Australian medical school runs its interview differently: some use a Multiple Mini Interview with six or more independently scored stations, others run a single structured panel, and a couple use their own name for a format that behaves like an MMI in practice. Each guide below covers the current format, how heavily the interview is weighted against UCAT and ATAR, and the mistakes that come up most often when applicants practise for it.
Deepmock students have now completed 10,000+ mock MMI stations across every format on this page, which is where the mistakes sections below come from: real patterns from real practice, not guesswork.
NSW
UNSW Sydney
Panel interview
UNSW does not run an MMI. Domestic applicants sit a structured panel interview with two interviewers.
Western Sydney University
MMI interview
Western Sydney University runs its MD interview as an online MMI delivered by video conference, with no in-person alternative for domestic applicants.
University of Newcastle
MSA interview
The University of Newcastle and University of New England share a Joint Medical Program, and its interview stage is called the Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA), not an MMI.
University of Sydney
No standard-entry interview
For standard domestic and international entry, the University of Sydney MD does not interview applicants at all: GPA and section-by-section GAMSAT ranking decide the outcome.
University of Notre Dame Australia (Sydney)
MMI interview
Notre Dame Sydney's MD interview is an asynchronous, online recorded Multiple Mini Interview with at least seven stations, the same recorded-response model Notre Dame uses at its Fremantle campus.
University of Wollongong
MMI interview
The University of Wollongong's MD interview is a live, online Multiple Mini Interview, not an asynchronous recorded format.
Macquarie University
MMI interview
Macquarie University's MD interview is a face-to-face Multiple Mini Interview for domestic applicants, held on campus rather than online.
University of New England
MSA interview
The University of New England shares the Joint Medical Program with the University of Newcastle, and the interview stage is called the Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA), not an MMI, across both universities.
QLD
Bond University
Online interview
Bond's medical degree does not use UCAT ANZ or UMAT at all; instead it runs its own online psychometric test as part of a staged selection process.
Griffith University
MMI interview
Griffith's Doctor of Medicine is a graduate-entry program, so you need a completed bachelor degree and a GAMSAT score above Griffith's minimum before you can even apply.
James Cook University
Panel interview
JCU's medicine interview is a single panel interview, not a Multiple Mini Interview, so preparation built entirely around rotating MMI stations will not match the actual format.
SA
Adelaide University
MMI interview
From 2026, the University of Adelaide and University of South Australia operate as one institution, Adelaide University, so medicine admissions pages now sit under that new name.
Flinders University
Semi-structured panel interview
Flinders runs a single semi-structured panel interview for its MD, not a rotating multi-station MMI, so the same panel sees you for the whole session rather than a fresh assessor at every stage.
VIC
Monash University
MMI interview
Monash runs its MD interview as an online Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) delivered over Zoom, not an in-person panel.
Deakin University
MMI interview
Deakin's Doctor of Medicine is a graduate-entry program requiring a completed bachelor degree and a competitive GAMSAT score; it does not use UCAT ANZ.
University of Melbourne
MMI interview
Melbourne shortlists MD applicants for interview through GEMSAS using GPA and GAMSAT before any interview happens, so an invitation already signals competitive academic and test results.
WA
University of Western Australia
MMI interview
UWA runs its MD interview as an eight-station Multiple Mini Interview, each station giving a short reading period before you respond to an interviewer.
Curtin University
MMI interview
Curtin's medical degree is the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (B-MBBS), a direct school-leaver entry program, not a Doctor of Medicine.
University of Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle)
MMI interview
Notre Dame Fremantle's MD interview is an asynchronous, online recorded Multiple Mini Interview with at least seven stations, each with a reading period followed by a timed recorded response.
