Australian Medical Interview Guides

Every Australian medical school runs its interview differently: some use a Multiple Mini Interview with six or more independently scored stations, others run a single structured panel, and a couple use their own name for a format that behaves like an MMI in practice. Each guide below covers the current format, how heavily the interview is weighted against UCAT and ATAR, and the mistakes that come up most often when applicants practise for it.

Deepmock students have now completed 10,000+ mock MMI stations across every format on this page, which is where the mistakes sections below come from: real patterns from real practice, not guesswork.

UNSW Sydney

Panel interview

UNSW does not run an MMI. Domestic applicants sit a structured panel interview with two interviewers.

Western Sydney University

MMI interview

Western Sydney University runs its MD interview as an online MMI delivered by video conference, with no in-person alternative for domestic applicants.

University of Newcastle

MSA interview

The University of Newcastle and University of New England share a Joint Medical Program, and its interview stage is called the Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA), not an MMI.

University of Sydney

No standard-entry interview

For standard domestic and international entry, the University of Sydney MD does not interview applicants at all: GPA and section-by-section GAMSAT ranking decide the outcome.

University of Notre Dame Australia (Sydney)

MMI interview

Notre Dame Sydney's MD interview is an asynchronous, online recorded Multiple Mini Interview with at least seven stations, the same recorded-response model Notre Dame uses at its Fremantle campus.

University of Wollongong

MMI interview

The University of Wollongong's MD interview is a live, online Multiple Mini Interview, not an asynchronous recorded format.

Macquarie University

MMI interview

Macquarie University's MD interview is a face-to-face Multiple Mini Interview for domestic applicants, held on campus rather than online.

University of New England

MSA interview

The University of New England shares the Joint Medical Program with the University of Newcastle, and the interview stage is called the Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA), not an MMI, across both universities.
